A wedding is a common ceremony spread widely amongst almost all the nations and traditions. But Sri Lankan weddings somehow are more colorful and interesting than the majority. It is not only because of the colorful jewelry and costumes, it's also because of the traditions and the customs that we follow. By following these rituals and traditions it is believed that the married couple will be blessed with prosperity and fortune.

The wedding culture in Sri Lanka consists of two different traditions, the Up country tradition also known as the Uda Rata tradition and the Southern Tradition also known as the Pahatha Rata tradition. The Uda Rata weddings are the most colorful ones and it is believed to be indigenous to Sri Lanka. The Pahatha Rata customs have a south Indian touch.

For all these rituals and traditions there are a lot of preparations to be done. The birth times of the couple will be taken in to consideration to come up with The Nakath timings ( A specific time which is considered good, all customs will be performed right on the given timings and not even a minute before or after) The nakath timings will be prepared according to the horoscopes of the couple. There will be specific timings and dates for the wedding date, making of the traditional sweets, exchanging rings and even for the going away. The wedding will be planned according to the Nakath timings and it'll also make sure the smooth flow of the customs at the wedding day. It'll bring peace of mind to the couple and they will enjoy a prosperous and a wonder full married life.

All these traditions and customs had been followed throughout centuries in Sri Lanka. Even today more than 90% of the weddings are planned according to the traditional rituals. Both Udarata and Pahatha rata customs have their own rituals to follow. The wedding will only be colorful if these traditions and customs are followed accordingly.
